Art Psychotherapy

Art Psychotherapy is a form of psychotherapy that incorporates creative expression—such as image-making, metaphor, dreams, music, and poetry—alongside talking, to support the emotional and physical challenges we may be facing. Sometimes, we may not have the words or conscious memory to express our thoughts and feelings, especially when early experiences are pre-verbal. In these cases, art materials can serve as a powerful medium through which unconscious experiences can emerge, be explored and worked with.

Adults

As an adult, using art may or may not feel familiar, you may be coming to therapy for the first time or have tried other therapies and curious to engage in something different. The need may be for varying reasons i.e, loss, anxiety, relationship issues, physical and mental health struggles or just wanting to learn about the self more.

You may be in the second half of life and unsure of previous decisions made and not knowing where to go. Whatever brings you here, engaging in Art Psychotherapy can offer a creative, mindful and tactile way to manage feelings, emotions and uncertainty. Providing focus, reflection and guidance, it can be a helpful way to integrate feelings, move through and process earlier difficulties thus supporting post traumatic growth.

Children and Adolescents

Art-making can be a powerful resource for children and adolescents, and is often readily embraced by young people due to its tactile and expressive nature. For similar reasons, it can also be supportive for individuals with physical or learning disabilities, as well as those who identify as neurodivergent—including ADHD, Autism Spectrum, and Dyslexia.

In mother-and-baby or parenting work, art-making can act as a bridge between parent and child. It provides a way to connect through creative expression, especially when words are difficult to find. This process can gently open up space for reflection, understanding, and growth within the relationship.
